GP subscribers send record 8.5m SMS
FE Report
1/6/2006

GrameenPhone (GP) subscribers have sent a record 8.5 million text messages (SMS) on the occasion of celebrating the new year 2006. This is four times higher than the number of SMS sent during the 2005 new year celebration.
SMS usage has increased significantly after GP reduced the per SMS tariff from Tk two to Tk 1.5 for GP to GP numbers in October 2005. GP also offers 50 free SMS with each 'djuice' SIM (subscriber's identity module).
In addition, the GP has developed services so that GP subscribers can also send and receive e-mails via SMS. The company is also providing various SMS-based push-pull services through which they can receive news and sports update, download ring-tones and obtain other useful information.
