President, PM greet people
10/10/2005

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed Sunday said role of both the ruling and opposition parties is very important in the parliamentary system, reports BSS.
Terming parliament as the centre in the system, he expressed the hope that all concerned would be more careful of discussing national issues in the house to make the parliamentary system more dynamic and lively.
In a message, the President greeted countrymen on completion of four years of the present four-party government. He said the alliance led by BNP had formed the government securing two-thirds majority in parliament in October 1, 2001, elections.
He said: "the people have a lot of expectations from the politicians. So, the political leaders should play an active role in fulfilling their expectations from their respective positions."
Despite unstable situation in the world, oil price hike and various adverse impacts, the country has achieved a remarkable progress upholding its image aboard, he said.
He said the country could be able to achieve its target by united efforts of all.
According to the electoral pledges, the government took various initiatives and implemented many programmes for development of education, health, agriculture, industry and environment, improvement of law and order, eradication of poverty and ensuring social security during the last four years, he said. The people are now enjoying benefits, he added.
Prof. Iajuddin said stipend programme for expansion of women education, improvement of education standard, environment and law and order, women empowerment, food security and press freedom are widely appreciated at home and abroad.
Meanwhile, in another message: Prime Minister Khaleda Zia today said her government has infused dynamism into the economy by restoring discipline in the socio-economic sphere.
"A balanced development is now visible everywhere in the country due to our sincere efforts," she said on completion of four years of the BNP-led four-party alliance government that took over on October 10 in 2001.
The Prime Minister greeted the countrymen on the occasion and expressed her gratitude to them again for "electing us with a massive mandate" in the October 1 free, fair and impartial elections of 2001.
Khaleda Zia said the government has achieved remarkable successes in different fields in the last four years through relentless endeavours.
She recalled that before assumption of power by the alliance government the country's economy was fragile, there was no law and order, the educational arena was full of chaos, terrorism engulfed every sphere of life and the means of earning livelihood was at stake.
"The days of that unbearable situation are gone," she said.
She asserted that massive development initiatives have been taken across the country for poverty alleviation and the law and order has been improved through enactment of appropriate laws and their strict enforcement.
Khaleda Zia said copying in public examinations was stopped, the standard of education improved and phenomenal success was achieved in the primary and mass education in the last four years.
She pointed out that positive trends were initiated in health services, empowerment of women, poverty alleviation and development of rural infrastructures.
Besides, she said, Bangladesh has entered a new era in telecommunication and information technology as well as extraction of mineral resources. Remarkable successes have also been achieved in communication and infrastructure sectors and social development.
The country has also earned recognition of the international community through a pragmatic diplomatic policy, she added.
