CCCI demands uninterrupted power supply in port city
FE Report
10/10/2005

The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has urged the government to ensure uninterrupted supply of power and water to the port city.
The CCCI also demanded of the government not to supply the electricity generated at the Kaptai and the Raozan power plants to the national grid and use the same to meet the local power requirement.
A statement issued by the CCCI Sunday said the chamber has placed a seven-point charter of demands with the government. Acting President of the chamber SM Nurul Huq said the industry and economy of the port city has been severely affected due to loadshedding.
He also demanded immediate implementation of the government decision of establishing 50 small power plants with the capacity of 10-50 megawatt each. He also called for ensuring the supply of electricity during the period between 'Ifter' and 'Tarabhi' prayers on priority basis.
The CCCI chief said aggrieved people have already attacked different power installations and cars of Power Development Board (PDB) protesting the erratic power supply. "The productions of export-oriented ready-made garments and perishable industrial segments are facing colossal financial loss due to the recent power crisis," the CCCI statement added.
On the nagging water crisis, the CCCI statement said the Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) can only meet one fourth of the total demand.
It urged to reconstitute the Chittagong WASA with proper public representation.
