Warne covets captaincy: Smith
12/26/2005

The ongoing war of words between the South African and Australian teams showed no sign of abating, with Graeme Smith offering his views on Shane Warne's captaincy aspirations.
In an interview with Beeld, the Afrikaans daily, Smith said that Warne was finding it hard to accept Ricky Ponting as captain and team leader, according to Cricinfo.
After Warne came out and said that he found Smith's captaincy bereft of imagination or innovation, Smith responded by telling Beeld that Warne's outburst was more that of a comedian than a cricketer, and that his comments were "laughable".
"The conclusion that we have come to as a team is that it bothers Warne tremendously that he is not the Australian captain," said Smith. I sincerely believe that is the one yearning desire that is still there in his cricket career. He would give his all to become Australian captain, but Ricky Ponting was appointed above him and he can just not handle that.
Smith opined that Warne's antics on the field merely increased the pressure on Ponting, currently under fire after South Africa's final-day escape at the WACA in Perth.
