AL to apprise diplomats of political situation Mar 14
3/11/2006

In a bid to have an interaction on the latest political scenario prevailing in the country, opposition Awami League (AL) has arranged a dinner on March 14 next for diplomats stationed in the capital, a competent source said, reports BDNEWS.
"It is a part of the ongoing interactions between us and others," a top AL leader told the news agency wishing anonymity.
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina is hosting the dinner for the diplomats at Hotel Radisson, the source added.
As the opposition combine of 14 political parties led by the AL has demanded reform in the Caretaker Government, Election Commission and the electoral laws, many of the diplomats have a positive opinion on their demand, according to sources.
Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan on March 7 hosted a briefing session for the diplomats where Japanese Ambassador Matsushiro Horiguchi on behalf of the diplomats requested the government to be 'more compromising' with the opposition on its demand for reforms.
On behalf of the government, Morshed Khan told the diplomats that they could discuss the opposition's demand inside the House or even outside and there was no doubt over the good intention of the government.
The Prime Minister in her concluding speech at the last parliament session on February 28 had proposed that a parliamentary committee be formed comprising members of the treasury and opposition benches and come out with some recommendations for implementation on the reform issue.
"We hope the opposition will accept the Prime Minister's offer and nominate their members for the committee," Khan told diplomats.
However, country's politics jolted against this backdrop as the opposition thought that the government lacked sincerity and it took the path of wasting time. AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil MP said they cannot beg the government and it is the government's responsibility to form the committee if it has any sincerity.
In the mean time, with the arrest of Jama'atul Mujaheedin Bangladesh kingpins Shaekh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, the issue of reform received a jolt. A drama was played in arresting the JMB leaders to divert public attention, said an AL leader.
