Electioneering has already begun although the last date for submission of nomination papers for the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) is March 12. The SCBA polls have been scheduled for March 29-30, reports BDNEWS.
Pro-government lawyers' body - the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (BJAF) has nominated former minister and High Court judge and SCBA president advocate Habibul Islam Bhuiyan for the post of president and Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun for the post of secretary.
On the other hand, pro-opposition lawyers' forum Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP) nominated former state minister and vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council, and convener of the SASP Barrister M Amir-ul Islam for the post of president and former deputy attorney general AM Aminuddin for the post of secretary.
A faction of the BJAF led by advocate TH Khan earlier nominated advocate ABM Nurul Islam for the post of president.
Voting in the 14-member executive committee of the SCBA will be held on March 29 and 30 from 10.00am to 5.0pm with an interval for one hour from 1.00pm to 2.00pm.
A seven-member election commission headed by former judge of the High Court Justice Nizamul Huq Nasim has been constituted to conduct the election.
As per the schedule, the candidates will have to submit their nomination papers between March 1 and 12. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on March 12. The last date for withdrawal of the candidatures is March 15.
SCBA sources said about 1,600 Supreme Court lawyers have been enlisted for casting votes in the two-day election.
