Vested quarter trying to destroy communal image: Shamsul
8/18/2006

MUNSHIGANJ, Aug 17 (BSS): Information Minister M Shamsul Islam Thursday said Bangladesh has centuries-old tradition of communal harmony with mutual tolerance, better understanding and peaceful co-existence among the people of all religious faiths.
"But a vested quarter has long been engaged in destroying the country's image abroad through spreading various false propaganda," he said while inaugurating Atish Deepankar public library at the Sadar Upazila headquarters of the district.
Chief executive of Zila Parisad M Tajul Islam was in the chair while Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Chai Xi, former DCCI president Sayeeful Islam, Prof. Sukomal Barua and Shree Mahananda Mahathero, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
Shamsul Islam said those who has been raising high their voice abroad saying there is not communal harmony in Bangladesh, have been virtually destroying the country's image there.
Referring to the government's efforts in ensuring communal harmony, he said the highest number of Puja Mandaps were erected across the country during Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Hindu community, over the last few years.
