US university adjudges BRAC 'social innovator of the year'
FE Report
3/13/2006

Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) has recently been honoured with the "Social Innovator of the Year Award' for 2006 by Brigham Young University (BYU) of the USA for its new initiative to increase poor people's accessibility to reading glasses.
BRAC Deputy Executive Director Mushtaque Chowdhury received the award at BYU, Utah in the USA on March 9 last, said a press release.
BRAC, one of the leading non-governmental organisations in the country, and Scojo Foundation of the USA were jointly awarded for their initiatives to help the poorest section of the people of the country to prevent worsening of eyesight.
The award carries a modest cash component that will help provide free reading-glasses to 1500 ultra-poor women.
About 30,000 health workers of BRAC carried out ophthalmologic tests among the rural people and sold affordable reading glasses to prevent worsening of eye-sight, a press release said.
Earlier, FINCA International, Micro-Business USA, Microcredit Summit Campaign, RESULTS and Freedom From Hunger had received the award.
