Illegal fuel business leaves environment at stake in Tongi
3/13/2006

TONGI, Mar 12 (BDNEWS): A section of unscrupulous people continue illegal fuel business at Tongi and its adjacent areas under the nose of the concerned authorities causing environmental contamination and depriving the government of huge taxes.
Sources said these people are selling fuel including petrol, diesel and kerosene at different points of the city including Tongi Ershad Nagar, College Gate, Cherag Ali, Anar Koli, Auchpara, Bara Bazar, Tongi Bazar and BSCIC Industrial Area without having the licences from the Fire Service.
The unscrupulous traders have been depriving the government of a huge amount of tax. At the same time, they are also storing the fuel on ground instead of using underground store ignoring the risk that at any time a big accident may occur, sources added.
During a spot visit, this correspondent found that the unscrupulous businessmen had been selling diesel-based fuel openly beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway storing it in drums instead of using underground store defying the rule.
Besides, fuel had also been sold in different local bazars and shops without any legal licence.
