3/18/2006

GAZIPUR, Mar 17 (UNB): Seven people were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus at Hijaltali in Kaliakoir Upazila on Dhaka-Tangail highway Friday morning.
The police said the Dhaka-bound microbus from Tangail collided with the Tangail-bound truck in front of Shilabrishti Petrol Pump at about 6.00am, killing five microbus passengers on the spot and injuring six others.
Two of the injured died at the Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital.
"The microbus was damaged badly in the collision and a pool of blood was seen inside it," said a spot account of the accident.
The deceased were identified as Ammatul Begum, wife of Tota Mia, their daughter Ruma (18), son Ripon (16), Tota Mia's brother Lal Miah (42), Hakimuddin (45), Sumon (16), and microbus driver Mamun (22).
Sources said all the deceased hailed from Bashail Upazila headquarters in Tangail. They were going to Zia International Airport (ZIA) in Dhaka by the microbus to receive Tota Miah who was scheduled to arrive from Saudi Arabia Friday morning.
Of the injured, Malek (35), and Sohel (13), were admitted to the Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital in critical condition.
On information, Kaliakoir police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.
The police also seized the truck but its driver managed to flee the scene.
