A 21-member Bangladesh contingent left the city Wednesday afternoon for Saudi Arabia to take part in the first Islamic Solidarity Games, beginning in the holy city of Makkah Friday, reports UNB. Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) treasurer Monirul Haq, president of Bangladesh Special Olympics M Ashraf-ud-Dowlah and BOA director and chief operating officer Col. M Waliullah gave a hearty send-off to the team at the airport before their departure by a Saudia flight at 4 pm. A total of 57 countries are expected to participate in the 13-day-long sports extravaganza of the Muslim World to be held in four Saudi cities -- Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Taif -- from April 8-20. BOA dputy secretary general Ishtiaq Ahmed Curren has been named as the Chef-de-Mission of Bangladesh contingent, which also comprises three journalists. The Bangladesh team, which consists of 14 sportsmen and seven officials, will compete in three events -- swimming, athletics and weightlifting -- and also in a special event of five-a-side football for the mentally retarded players. Bangladesh's most prospective event, swimming, will be held in Jeddah from April 9-13, athletics in Makkah April 12-16 and weightlifting in Madinah April 14-17.
