Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams won their second-round matches at the Bausch & Lomb Championship, reports BBC. Top seed Davenport defeated Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico 6-4 6-3, while Williams, seeded five, thrashed Slovakia's Martina Sucha 6-0 6-1. But 10th seed Karolina Sprem lost to Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual, while 13th seed Barbora Strycova was ousted by Japan's Ai Sugiyama. Williams was always in control though as she crushed Sucha in 42 minutes. She won the first 11 games before losing her serve, then broke Sucha again to clinch the match. Davenport, the world number one, struggled in the first set but finished her match strongly, winning nine consecutive points. Likhovtseva overcame Anna Smashnova of Israel 5-7 6-1 6-2 in the first round, while Farina Elia beat compatriot Tathiana Garbin 6-4 6-2. But Croatia's Sprem crashed to her sixth first-round defeat in eight tournaments this year, losing 4-6 6-3 6-4.
