Hasina calls for fighting against repression
12/25/2005

Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina Saturday called for fighting against all kinds of repression, misrule and misdeeds unitedly for human civilisation and for establishing human rights, reports UNB.
Hasina made this remark when the members of Christian community led by Christian Association President and General Secretary Promod Mankin MP and Nirmal Rozario met her at Sudha Sadan on the occasion of their greatest religious festival, Xmas.
Archbishop of Dhaka Paulinus Costa, STD, DD, was also present.
The AL president urged people irrespective of faith to get united to build Bangladesh as a democratic, non-communal country that would uphold the spirit of Liberation War.
"I would like to express my Xmas greetings to all Christian brethren all over the world through you," she said, adding, "We believe in a society of communal harmony where all people can practice their respective religion".
The leader of the opposition reminded that Bangladesh got her independence for all peoples and at the cost of a colossal sacrifice from people of all religions.
"But, assuming power in 2001, this BNP-Jamaat coalition government has carried out an unbearable repression on the minority communities," she said in her oft-repeated allegation, which the authorities have denied.
"Let us pray today so that the country and the nation could get rid of grenade and bomb attacks, repression, killings, militant attacks and rape," Hasina urged her audience.
Hasina strongly condemned the "repression" on Christian Association General Secretary Nirmal Rozario.
Earlier, Hasina, along with the Archbishop, cut the Xmas Day cake. The Christian leaders gave an Xmas card and floral greetings to the opposition leader as Xmas carol was performed.
