Demand for gas supply deepens
Our Correspondent
2/25/2005

KHULNA, Feb 24: The demand for gas supply in the district has deepened in the recent times as the people face acute crisis of firewood.
Taking advantage of this situation, a section of dishonest traders have been charging extra prices from the local buyers against liquefied petroleum (LP) gas and kerosene. As a result, the innocent users suffer much, according to sources.
It is alleged that though Khulna is situated very near to the Sundarbans, the crisis of firewood and its high price have left the people in a helpless situation. Some Tush (husk) mills have been established to meet firewood demand.
Tush or wood dust is now being sold between Tk 110 and Tk 120 per mound against its previous price of Tk 60 and Tk 70.
Many people, however, use kerosene instead of Tush for its relatively cheaper price. At present, per liter kerosene is being sold at Tk 24 in the local market and the monthly expenditure of kerosene users is Tk 500.
On the other hand, the LP gas users face serious problems. At present, per cylinder LPG is being sold at Tk 515.
When asked about such unusual price hike, a number of LPG traders said that as the price of dollars fluctuated in the international market, the price of LPG also seesawed in the local market.
To solve the problem, the people of Khulna have been demanding gas supply in the district for long.
