India set to complete 30 river linking projects this year
FE Report
2/25/2005

India is set to complete at least 30 of its river linking projects in the current year although it has been saying the project plan is still on the drawing board, said leaders of the Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) Thursday.
"The Bangladesh government has not been able to stop its Indian counterpart from implementing the River Linking Project (IRLP)," said noted economist and the president of the BAPA Mozaffar Ahmed at a press conference held at the National Press Club.
"Although the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka denied the report on the implementation of the river linking project in India, the Indian central government looks certain to complete its 30 projects during the current year," he said.
The BAPA leaders have been trying to organise regional and international movement against the implementation of the Indian river linking projects, which might be a potential threat to the ecological balance of Bangladesh and some parts of Indian West Bengal state, Mozaffar Ahmed said adding it will result in desertification of the region.
