Physicians of a newly created Cardiac Centre at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University have observed that a growing number of young people are suffering from different coronary and heart diseases because of their lifestyle and environment in their work places. "It is a shocking revelation that people in Bangladesh at their mid-thirties suffer heart attacks and cardiac problems," said KMHS Sirajul Haque, Professor and chairman of Department of Cardiology at the university, popularly known as Post Graduate (PG) Hospital. In western countries people face coronary and cardiac diseases in their 50s and mid-40s, Prof. Haque said. "The rate of incidence of cardiac disease in Bangladesh is higher than that it is in America," Prof. Haque said while dwelling on the healthcare services at the Cardiac Centre. The physicians have closely analysed the age groups of the cardiac patients and the nature of their heart related problems after opening the exclusive Cardiac Centre. They have said that a wide range of motivational and health awareness programmes are necessary to lessen the risk of cardiac diseases. In recent years, more young people died in Bangladesh because of cardiac arrests. Prof. Haque expressed the hope that Bangladesh would be able to treat cardiac patients with "perfection and accuracy" after three more years when the PG would be equipped with modern operation and nursing systems. "We need more investment, more skilled physicians and nurses," said AKM Shafiqur Rahman, professor of Anesthesiology and an intensive care specialist at the Cardiac Centre. The Centre provides services to more than 16,000 patients a year, of which around 1,500 were indoor patients. "Private hospitals charge Tk 400 to TK 500 for an echocardiography (ECG) while PG takes only Tk 100," Haque said suggesting that the private clinics and hospitals should also lower their rates for some diagnosis. An associate Professor of the Centre, Syed Ali Ahsan explained how angiogram has revolutionised the treatment facility of cardiac patients. He said the center is able to carry out five such investigations a day.
