Saifur wants tight regulations for cell phone cos
3/10/2006

Finance and Planning Minister M Saifur Rahman Thursday asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to tighten its regulations on the mobile phone operators to raise revenue from them, reports BDNEWS.
"With a relatively small investment, some mobile phone operators are remitting huge amount of money from the country regularly," Saifur told journalists after a meeting with the BTRC on how to strengthen regulations to increase revenue earnings.
He said an increased remittance of money is also creating pressure on the foreign exchange reserve.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Salehuddin Ahmed and BTRC Chairman Omar Faruk were present at the meeting.
The finance minister also criticised the mobile phone operators for not off-loading of shares through stock market.
The mobile phone companies are doing businesses without giving any licence fee, which is not possible in other countries.
"They are able to do the business due to our weak regulatory systems," he said.
He said now time has come to review the mobile companies' profit.
"I have asked the BTRC to increase revenues from the mobile phone companies that have been doing businesses for the last several years," he said.
Saifur also asked the BB not to receive investment proposals of mobile phone operators without proper assessment and evaluation.
