Flow of Ganges water declines
3/10/2006

Flow of the Ganges water at the Hardinge Bridge declined to 26,783 Cusecs during the last 10 days of February as against 35,000 Cusecs stipulated in the Ganges Water Sharing agreement with India. Informing this at a press conference Thursday, Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed said the matter was repeatedly raised with India but there was no response from that side. He said availability of water at Farakka point during the time declined to barely 53,566 Cusecs, the lowest ever, because of heavy withdrawal in the upstream. Explaining his recent visit to China the minister said he held meetings with his Chinese counterpart Wang Su Cheng from February 26 to March 3 and discussed matters pertaining to water crisis during the dry season and flooding during the monsoon. — UNB
