Poor gas supply has aggravated the sufferings of the city dwellers, who are already reeling from a nagging power crisis, reports UNB According to sources in the state-owned Titas Gas Company, the pressure in gas supply-lines within the city area Thursday came down to 30 PSI (pressure per square inch) against the normal pressure level of 50 PSI. The drastic fall in the pressure in the distribution lines has led to a severe crisis in gas supply in many areas in the city, including Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Kalyanpur, Panthapath and Rayerbazar. The gas consumers felt the problem of low pressure significantly from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. "We received complaints from both the domestic and commercial consumers," a Titas Gas official admitted. He said the country produced about 1439 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas Thursday against the daily demand of 1493 mmcf. Meanwhile, the city dwellers have been experiencing frequent load shedding of electricity both during day and night, particularly, since Monday as the fault in the Ulon-Dhanmondi 132-kV transmission line is yet to be repaired. The consumers in Karwan bazar, Rayerbazar, Kakrail, Mohammadpur, Paribagh, Segunbagicha, Shahbagh, Khilgaon and Malibagh areas suffered power outage several times. An official told the agency that the DESA went for 35 MW load-shedding in the areas during the off-peak hours while the whole city had a shortfall of about 400 MW during the peak hours from 5 pm on Thursday. The country, during the peak hours, generated about 3200 MW against the country's 4200 MW demand. DESA received about 1140 MW against its demand of 1550 MW, said a DESA official.
