Tax evasion in import of luxury goods continues unabated in Ctg port
Our Correspondent

CHITTAGONG, Oct 17: The importers of luxury goods, in collaboration with some dishonest customs officials and C & F agents has been evading several millions taka of duties per month in the Chittagong port, said sources. Ultimately, it has been depriving the government from earning legitimate revenue for years.
The tendency of importing different kinds of luxury goods has increased during the recent time and the volume of imported goods has reached around Tk 2 billion (200 crore) per month on an average. These goods are mainly imported from India, Korea, China, Japan and Hongkong.
However, the prices of those goods are shown almost half in the import related papers and thus taxes are evaded on the first phase.
Then quantity of the imported goods are also shown less than the real quantity of import. Thus, duties of the imported goods are only paid up to the quantity shown in the documents and rest of the goods is cleared on evading taxes, the sources also said.
In this way, legitimate government duties are evaded against the excess goods in collaboration with some customs officials and C & F agents.
Many of the imported luxury goods are manufactured in the country and even superior to those imported from abroad. Still luxury items are being imported with an evil intention of the dishonest importers.
