Eight women receive laurels

          RAJBARI, Oct 17: Eight women of the district have been awarded at a function for their outstanding contribution to change the lots of poor women in rural areas. The function was organised by the District Celebration Committee to mark the World Rural Women Day at Officers' Club Saturday. Zila Mohila Parisad President Debahuti Chakravarti attended the programme as the chief guest with Shangkor Chandra Sinha in the chair. Later, crests and certificates were distributed among the distinguished women. They are Sufia Begum, Achhia Khatun, Rebeka Khatun, Shipra Rani Ghosh, Nazma Begum, Rokeya Begum, Rebeka Khatun and Rubiya. — UNB

Pirates loot valuables, injure four

BARGUNA, Oct 17: Pirates swooped on a goods-laden trawler in Baleshwar river Friday night and looted valuables worth Tk 40,000 injuring four boatmen. The helmsmen of the trawler said the Patharghata bound trawler from Khulna when arrived at the estuary of the river at midnight came under attack by pirates. The pirates beat them mercilessly leaving four of them injured seriously and decamped with the booty. The injured Noor Alam, Faruq, Nuruzzaman and Milon were admitted to the Patharghata Health Complex. — UNB
