GOALANDO (Rajbari), Oct 17 (UNB): A case has been filed against some activists of a local non-government organisation (NGO), including its programme manager, for felling 35,000 trees at a cost of Tk 3.5 million (35 lakh). Forest officer Abu Bakkar Siddiqui filed the case against the activists of the NGO including its programme manager Noor-e-Alam Piyaru and employees Azizul Sheikh and Dr Zabed Saturday. According to the complaint, a group of 60 people led by Noor-e-Alam Piyaru cut 35,000 trees at the char area on October 11. Forest Department said they started planting trees on 150 hectares of Char area of Uzanchar union parisad in the upazila at the end of 2004 under the social afforestation programme of the government. But the local NGO 'Samata' protesting the programme said the landless people possess the right to settle on the newly emerged char lands. They said they would continue their movement to establish the settlement rights of the landless people of the area. Meanwhile, officials concerned have asked to take legal action in this connection at a meeting of the district law and order committee at DC's conference room Sunday.
