Bus owners warned of actions for charging extra fares
10/26/2005

Communications Minister Nazmul Huda warned Tuesday that actions would be taken against those who would charge bus fares more than what the government has recently fixed, reports UNB.
"Actions will be taken against those who will fail to abide by the government orders," he said replying to a volley of questions from journalists on excess fares being charged by bus owners.
The minister was speaking to the journalists at a 'Meet-the-Reporters' programme organised by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) at its auditorium in the city.
DRU organised the programme to discuss issues like harassment of passengers, raising bus fares and extortion ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr and overall development of transport and communication sectors.
The minister, flanked by DRU President Shafiqul Karim and General Secretary Sakhawat Hossain Badsha, provided details of the steps taken by his government for the overall development of the country's communication sector and later answered to various queries of the newsmen.
Commenting on the confusion about the distances of various routes, Huda said there should not be any confusion about the distance because it can be measured. "If any confusion arises in this regard, it would be resolved through measuring."
He said bus fares have been increased reasonably in the wake of fuel price hike and no one should demand more than that.
