Speakers emphasised planned urbanisation, proper policy formulation and its appropriate implementation for creating the necessary environment for children living in cities. Unplanned, chaotic and unregulated development of capital city and ad hoc and ineffective policy interventions accompanied with dire poverty in the local areas have resulted in growing number of rootless children along with their families in the city, observed the speakers. Addressing a workshop noted economist Atiur Rahman said, " Impact of rapid but unplanned urbanisation will have negative effect on life expectancy, increase addiction, growing rate of illiteracy, more competitive and insecure life, deteriorating law and order situation, inadequacy of urban utility services, social problems leading to more social unrest." The workshop on 'Children Living in Cities: The case of Metropolis Dhaka' was jointly organised by Unnayan Shamannay, NGO, and Plan Bangladesh, NGO, in the city Tuesday.
