UN has received less than a third of its request for Pakistan quake victims
10/26/2005

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 25 (AP): Despite fresh appeals and warnings of a second wave of deaths, the United Nations said it has received less than 30 per cent of the US$312 million it desperately needs to help earthquake victims in Pakistan's ravaged mountains.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan has invited ministers to attend a high-level donor conference in Geneva on Wednesday to try to mobilise additional financial support for the massive relief effort that is trying to help 3.0 million people affected by the Oct 8 quake.
"If things don't turn on Wednesday, I don't know where we're going," said UN deputy emergency relief coordinator Margareta Wahlstrom on Monday. "It is quite worrisome because the Red Cross is reporting the same problems."

Indian military setting up relief camp for Pak quake victims

GULPUR (AP): Indian troops have set up a relief camp for Pakistani quake victims along the two countries' disputed border in Kashmir, although the camp remains empty as they try to broker a deal that would allow people to cross the militarized frontier.
A visit to the camp in Gulpur on Tuesday revealed two medical tents equipped to carry out minor surgery and shelters for about 100 people.
The camp is part of a plan India announced on Saturday to set up three relief centers along the so-called Line of Control, said an Indian army spokesman in Kashmir, Lt Col VK Batra.

Rescuers find body of one French climber killed in Nepal avalanche

KATHMANDU (AFP): Search teams found the body of one French member of an 18-strong French-led mountain climbing expedition killed in a massive avalanche in northwest Nepal five days ago, officials said Tuesday.
The president of the privately-run Himalayan Rescue Association in Kathmandu, Bikram Neupane, said rescuers at the scene had not yet identified the body of the dead climber.
Seven French and 11 Nepali climbers, all part of an expedition attempting to summit the 6,981-metre (22,987-foot) Mount Kangaru in northwest Nepal, were hit by the avalanche at a base camp located at 5,000 metres on October 20.
