Probe into Premier Bank
SC vacates HC order on fake accounts
2/25/2005

The Supreme Court (SC) vacated Thursday the Wednesday's High Court (HC) order staying the process of investigation by the Bangladesh Bank into fake accounts opened in Premier Bank branches, reports UNB.
Chamber Judge Amirul Kabir Chowdhury passed the interim order and set Sunday for hearing by the full bench of the petition moved by additional attorney general Fida M Kamal.
Bangladesh Bank and Security & Exchange Commission (SEC) have detected fake accounts in Premier Bank and closed the doors for its entry to the capital market. The actions were challenged by the Premier Bank of which former Awami League MP HBM Iqbal is the chairman.
On investigation, SEC and the central Bank had unearthed irregularities and more than 25,000 fake accounts in different names.
Informed sources said the recent activities of the Premier Bank were designed to manipulate the price of its shares for making a windfall profit.
