Probe into Bangla Bhai's bank account underway
10/19/2005

BOGRA, Oct 19 (BDNEWS): Bank and intelligence agencies are going to investigate the bank account of Bangla Bhai unearthed in the Al-Arafa Islami Bank, Bogra branch.
The bank account of the banned Islamic extremist group, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was unearthed by the bank officials in April last.
JMB operation commander Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Abdul Awal, son-in-law of Shaikh Abdur Rahman and JMB regional commander Shafiqul Islam used to operate this account jointly.
Sources said that this account was opened at the Bogra branch of the Al-Arafa Islami Bank in February 2003.
While opening the account, Karnipara of Gabtoli upazila under Bogra district was used as the address of Bangla Bhai, and Sighra of Natore was used for Abdul Awal and Shaghata upazila of Gaibandha for Shafiqul Islam.
Sources said the new manager of the bank traced the account from photograph of Bangla Bhai in last April and informed the higher authorities of the matter.
Intelligence sources said the frozen account was used for running JMB activities and subscription from home and abroad came to this account.
The Al-Arafa Islami bank head office and the Bangladesh Bank (BB) have also started the process of investigation.
