Offer to set up sky train in capital by US co gets DCC nod
2/8/2006

The Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has agreed with the proposal of a US private sector transport company to set up sky train in and around the capital city at a cost of nearly Tk 65.00 billion (Tk 6,500 crore), report agencies.
"In principle, we agreed with the proposal, but, discussions should be held among the DCC, the concerned ministries and the US company on different important aspects before giving final approval of the project," said the DCC mayor.
Talking to the press after a meeting with the visiting delegation of the American Transport System Corporation (ATSC) at Nagar Bhaban Tuesday, he said, "We have to think about alternative transport system -- be it sky train or underground rail to give relief to the city dwellers from severe traffic congestion". About sky train, he said the system got popularity across the world and so we might think of it.
When asked about the outcome of the meeting, Khoka said we have asked the ATSC delegation to submit a full-fledged concept paper to the concerned authorities to this end. After receiving the paper , we will conduct a feasibility study to examine the prospect of the project, he added.
Meanwhile, a four-member delegation from a US-based consortium of investors led by Chairman of ATSC Norbert Von Boode arrived in the capital Monday to examine the prospect of introducing sky rail in and around the capital city with an investment of US$1.0 billion which is equivalent to nearly Tk 65.00 billion.
