High oil prices may bring to an end the low fares that domestic and international passengers have been enjoying for the past few months. International airlines have announced a hike in fuel surcharge, as oil prices nudge the $60 mark, reports BDNEWS. The US Department of Transportation has given US carriers permission to increase the surcharge from $20 to $30 each way, which means passengers visiting the United States would have to pay a $60 (BDT 3,600) surcharge for a round-trip fare. Carriers like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have already announced increases in the surcharge and others are in the process of implementing it. High fuel prices are impacting profitability for carriers around the world. In a statement in New York Monday, International Air Transport Association director general Giovanni Bisignani said the high price of fuel is hurting profitability.
