Drug smuggling rampant in Rajshahi

          RAJSHAHI, Apr 5: Smuggling of drugs like phensidyl, hemp, heroin and pathedine through different bordering routes is rampant in Rajshahi.
According to a source, smuggled goods worth millions of taka enter the district everyday through different secret routes.
According to the law enforcement agency officials, some strong syndicates are involved in the business.
In this situation, the government is being deprived of revenue worth millions of taka everyday.
Besides, arms, ammunition and explosives are also being smuggled into the country, while imported foreign goods like gold bar, diesel, silk yarn, deep tubewells and bell metals are being smuggled out of the country everyday.
Although a tense situation is prevailing in the bordering areas of the country, the bordering routes of Rajshahi with India remain open for the smugglers.
The routes are also favourite for trafficking women and children.
The members of different law enforcement agencies in Rajshahi rescued 20 women and children from the traffickers from different places of the districts during the last two months.
There are some clandestine wholesale markets for selling drugs at various places of Godagari, Sarangpur Bazar, Rail Bazar and Mohishalbari, Sultanganj, Premtoli and Rajabari of Godagari thana of the district where the drug peddlers sell the smuggled items.
