Brawl over Teletalk SIM distribution
4/6/2005

An angry group of officials of the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) were engaged in a brawl at a meeting Monday night of Bangladesh Civil Service Telecom Samity (BCSTS) in Dhaka over Teletalk, reports BDNEWS.
Meeting sources said the angry BTTB engineers and officials warned the Managing Director of Teletalk and President of BCSTS, M Obaidullah, of their actions to obstruct the distribution of SIM card of Teletalk from Tuesday -- the much-talked-about BTTB's mobile phone service-provider, if their demand was not met.
The angry officials demanded that the BTTB's chairman should also remain as the chairman of Teletalk. Teletalk must not operate as a separate entity, they further demanded.
The Teletalk Managing Director, M Obaidullah, opposed the idea during the meeting. He termed the proposal of the concerned officials as being contrary to the organogram of Teletalk. The officials then became agitated. A brawl started afterwards.
"We will engage our company officials and employees for SIM distribution and if there is any obstacle, the government will look into it," M Obaidullah was quoted as having said during the meeting.
The meeting was held at the BCSTS office.
SIM distribution for Teletalk is continuing for those who submitted the forms which were distributed earlier. The distribution of fresh forms has been stopped.
Meanwhile, the leaders of BTTB workers' leaders demanded Monday of the authorities that steps should be taken immediately to run its mobile network system by the BTTB board, instead of the government-approved Teletalk Company Ltd.
Placing the demand before a workers' meeting at the premises of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Telephone office complex, the leaders of Bangladesh T&T Sramik Karmochari Federal Union (BTSKFU) urged all its workers and employees to oppose the government move to bring about any structural change in the board.
President of Jatiya Sramik League Abdul Matin Master attended the meeting as the chief guest. Hanif Uddin presided over it.
Among others, Aminul Huq Faruk, Tofayel Ahmed, Jahangir Alam Manzu and BTSFU leaders Nurul Azad and SMA Mukit addressed the meeting.
They protested the 'privatisation' move and also the structural changes in the T&T Board.
The leaders also urged the government to implement the demands raised by the T&T Rakhsa Committee (Save T&T Committee).
