Banners with mass signatures to protest Kibria killing
4/1/2005

A 6500-feet long white-coloured banner with signatures from thousands of people was displayed Thursday at capital's Manik Miah Avenue to protest the assassination of former Finance Minister SAMS Kibria, reports BDNEWS.
Thousands of people from different walks of life, opinion and professions took part in the non-violent demonstration on 2.5 kilometres long road.
The enthusiastic demonstrators, responding to the call from widow Asma Kibria, put their signatures on the white banner demanding arrest and trial of the killers of the former finance minister.
The display of the banner continued for two and a half hours beginning at 4.0pm, in which men, women, elderly and children stood with Asma Kibria wearing blue dresses expressing solidarity with the sentiment and demand of late Kibria's family members.
"I have seen the banner began from the western part of Manik Miah Avenue and expanded up to the whole avenue, Khamarbari and Bijoy Swarani," said Syed Shamsul Huq, an eminent writer, who also took part in the demonstration.
Apart from the mass signature on the banner, Bangladesh Muktijuddhho Projonmo arranged a poster exhibition where some 16 art works were displayed.
At the same time, artist Saidul Huq Juise came up with a huge horrible and ferocious-looking statue labelled "Dance of a Monster". "The ferocious-looking monster statue with ten hands have symbol of Jatiya Sangsad, mike, grenade, book, national flower lotus, Shaheed Minar, mosque, coffin, bag of money and banana. It also has a sword on its chest which is grabbing everything of the country," said Juise.
In front of the Jatiya sangsad Bhaban, there was a white banner inscribed with red coloured ink "Why the parliament died in this way? Why it is silent?"
During the demonstration, one side of the Manik Miah Avenue was closed for traffic movement.
Apart from, Asma Kibria, sisters of late Kibria, son Reza Kibria and his wife Rina Sultana Kibria, relatives and host of admirers, Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil, presidium member Johra Tajuddin, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Gonoforum president Dr Kamal Hossain, general secretary Saifudin Ahmed Manik, Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon, Bimol Biswas, Justice KM Sobhan, Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, Prof AAMS Arefin Siddiqui, Shahriar Kabir, Ramendu Majumder, Syed Shamsul Huq, Ali Zaker, Sara Zaker, vice principal Abdus Shaheed and different socio-cultural organisations also took part in the demonstration.
