Female commissioners unable to take part in CCC dev activities
4/1/2005

CHITTAGONG, Mar 31 (BDNEWS): The female ward commissioners of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elected from reserved women seats are unable to take part in the development activities. They are also facing discrimination in their work places.
Some elected female ward commissioners of the CCC told this correspondent.
Ward commissioner Hasina Zafar who was elected for two successive terms is boycotting the ensuing election in protest against the discrimination on female ward commissioners.
Enthusiasm among the inhabitants of the port city is prevailing over the coming CCC election sheduled for May 9. The number of reserved women seats in the election is 14.
The female ward commissioner alleged that she was excluded from the development activities of city corporation since she was elected from preserved women seat. She also alleged that discrimination between male and female ward commissioners is being created in every sphere.
She said that other female ward commissioners also expressed the same opinion when she talked to them. Some legal bars also made the activities of the female ward commissioners limited.
These limitations are also playing an important role to create discrimination between male and female ward commissioners.
Another ward commissioner Saiyeda Rehana Kabir Ranu told the reporter, though the issue of equal rights between men and women is enshrined in the constitution, it is not reflected in the circular of the local government division. commissioners of general seat would be able to assist in conducting census and birth and death registrations.
They could even issue nationality, inheritance and character certificates. But the commissioners elected from reserved seats would not be able to perform these activities.
She also alleged that according to the circular one-third members of the city corporation were supposed to be elected from reserved seats, which is not followed in the Chittagong City Corporation.
